History of GCUES Aides
Since January 1975, when The Grand Council underwent reorganization, the Grand Council of United Emerald Societies Inc. has been the governing body responsible for selecting the Aide to Grand Marshal representing the Emerald Societies in the New York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Prior to our reorganization The Grand Council of Irish Societies Inc. and the National Grand Council of Irish Emerald Societies Inc. selected the Aide to the Grand Marshal representing the Emerald Societies.
In addition to the New York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, the Grand Council has Aide positions in the Brooklyn Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (Park Slope), the Bayside Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (Queens, NY), and a Deputy Grand Marshal position in the Queens County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (Rockaway Beach, NY).
Since 2020, the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) have been provided with Aide to Grand Marshal positions in the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade by the Parade Committee.
The FDNY Aide to the Grand Marshal position in the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is shared by the FDNY Emerald Society and the FDNY Holy Name Society.
The NYPD Aide to the Grand Marshal position is shared annually between the NYPD Emerald Society and the NYPD Holy Name Society.
